Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards 2024 presented by Viking
Launched in 2015, the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards (ESTWA) seek to celebrate the best travel writing, and travel writers, in the world. This year we have partnered with Viking to bring you five awards.
The Shortlists
The Edward Stanford Travel Book of the Year
The Viking Award for Fiction with a Sense of Place
Children's Travel Book of the Year
Bradt New Travel Writer of the Year
The world’s best competition for unpublished travel writers. In association with the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards.
For over twenty years, the Bradt Guides ‘New Travel Writer of the Year’ competition has been seeking out and championing new writing talent. Previous winners and finalists in the competition have gone on to see their work published in newspapers, travel magazines and books.
The theme for this year’s competition is Taking the risk. Entrants were invited to submit an original piece of writing of between 600 and 800 words which either includes this phrase or clearly touches on the theme.
First prize is a five nights’ all-inclusive trip to St Lucia, courtesy of the St Lucia Tourism Authority and Calabash Cove Resort & Spa.
Edward Stanford Outstanding Contribution to Travel Writing Award:
Selected by a panel at Stanfords, this award goes to a giant of travel writing who has consistently inspired others to go out and explore more. Previous recipients of this award are Bill Bryson, Michael Palin, Jan Morris, Colin Thubron, Paul Theroux Dervla Murphy, Hilary Bradt and Tony Wheeler.
To be announced along with the winners from the other categories at the Awards Ceremony on the 20th March 2024.
Each award winner will be presented with a hand-made globe by Lander & May in the Isle of Wight featuring a design produced exclusively for the awards.
