Bradt Travel Guides New Travel Writer of the Year

Bradt Travel Guides have long been committed to the promotion of travel-writing talent – indeed, we’ve held a travel-writing competition annually for over two decades. Now we are teaming up with the Edward Stanford awards to search for our ‘New Travel Writer of the Year’.

Open only to unpublished writers, this is a very special competition. The prize includes a safari holiday for two to Uganda, a paid commission to write about the trip, a place on the Bradt Travel-Writing Seminar, and an antique globe trophy presented at a glittering awards ceremony. Whether you’re an aspiring travel writer, a dedicated diarist or simply someone who fancies a challenge, this competition is for you!

Founded in 1974, Bradt Travel Guides is now the largest independent guidebook publisher in the UK, with over 200 titles currently in print, over half of which have no direct competition from other guidebook lists.

We’re all about producing pioneering guides to exceptional places. With this award, we hope to showcase some of the exceptional new travel writers out there.

To enter the competition, you should write a piece of 600–800 words relating to the theme 'A brief encounter'. The piece must be original, written in English and the first person, and based on personal experience relating to the theme. The deadline for submission is midnight on the 2nd of January 2017. The competition is open only to those who have never received payment for a travel-related article published in print or online (with the exception of competition entries for which a cash prize is awarded). For full entry details, terms and conditions, please visit the Bradt website.

First Prize The wonderful main prize is a 7-day Gorillas and Lions Safari in Uganda provided by TravelLocal, a commission to write an article about the prize trip for publication on the Bradt website, an Edward Stanford Awards antique globe trophy, and a place on the annual Bradt Travel-Writing Seminar (run in conjunction with Travellers’ Tales, the UK’s leading training agency for aspiring travel writers).

Two runners-up will receive places on the annual Bradt Travel-Writing Seminar (held in November).

All three shortlisted entrants will be invited to join the judges at the Edward Stanford Awards ceremony dinner – at which the winner will be announced and the trophy presented.

Submission deadline: 2nd January 2017
